She spent thirty years as a middle school English teacher in Iowa, after which she retired and spent the rest of her life traveling and dancing with her husband, Verlin. She enjoys gardening, and earned a first-degree black belt in karate alongside her daughter, Lisa, and grandchildren, Tyler and Katie. She died in 2018.

Katie Spoon was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and is the granddaughter of Phyllis Cadwallader, the author of Sunshine. She earned her BA from Hamline University in Saint Paul, MN in History and Religion, and her MA from Drake University in Des Moines, IA, in Public Administration. She learned her love of animals from her grandmother.

Rylie Lawrence is an artist born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, but currently living and making art in the Twin Cities. Her current focus is across multiple media, utilizing printmaking methods on ceramic surfaces, integration of fibers, as well as mosaic, graphic design, and stained glass, all which call attention to everyday life. By working across media, she endeavors to bring the mundane into focus and highlight the beauty and complexity that exists within what is deemed seemingly common. Lawrence holds a BFA in printmaking with a minor in art history from the University of Northern Iowa, and completed the MN NICE certificate program in the fall of 2020.
